中方从中国大熊猫保护研究中心选定了一对大熊猫“云川”(雄性)、“鑫宝”(雌性)，并为两只大熊猫安排了经验丰富的饲养师和兽医陪同赴美。美方正在对大熊猫场馆进行改造提升，为大熊猫创造更大、更舒适的生活环境。同时，动物园还为两只大熊猫配备了曾在中国学习交流大熊猫饲养管理、日常护理及相关科研技术的专业团队。
为确保两只大熊猫在美健康生活，今年3月，中国野生动物保护协会组织专家前往美国，与圣迭戈动物园就开展大熊猫合作进行深入磋商，开展技术指导与交流，明确大熊猫饲养管理、居住环境、健康护理等标准要求。
美国圣迭戈动物园是世界五大动物园之一。按照协议内容，双方正在积极推进大熊猫赴美前相关准备工作。
